Genu varum, also known as bowlegs, is a condition characterized by an outward bowing of the legs, resulting in a distinct gap between the knees while the feet and ankles are together. This condition is typically seen in infants and toddlers as they begin to walk, and it often corrects itself with normal growth and development. However, in some cases, genu varum may persist into childhood or even adulthood. Causes: Physiological: Genu varum is a normal variation in infants and toddlers. It occurs due to the fetal position in the womb, and the legs may gradually straighten as the child grows and starts walking. Rickets: Genu varum can be caused by a vitamin D deficiency, leading to a condition called rickets. Rickets softens the bones and can result in abnormal leg bowing. Blount's Disease: This is a rare growth disorder of the tibia (shinbone) that can cause severe bowing of the legs, and it typically develops in early childhood. Genetic Factors: Some genetic conditions may contribute to the development of genu varum.
